Hi All,

Our client is still using iData agent to Backup VM’s. To convinse then for moving from iData agent Backups to VSA backup pleaseprovide pros and cons of VSA Bakcups.

To name a few:

  • Less impact op the performance of the applications running on the VM because the backup is offloaded to a acces node
  • Improved RTO in case of DR
  • It's simple to configure from a end user perspective
  • Only agents required when you need to perform specific application level backups

In addition to Onno's reply:

Please note, functions might not be available depending on the hypervisor you are using.

Con:

  • When using ‘slow’ storage there can be an impact on VM performance when disk consolidation is performed
  • Legacy applications / cluster solutions can experience timeout issues when the when disk consolidation is performed
  • Non default Linux kernels can have issues regarding quiescing
  • Shared disks cannot be backed up
