Dear Commvault Team,

We are planning to implement a replication solution that utilizes the VSS service on a Windows machine. At the same time, we would like to perform backups of SQL Server (MSSQL) and files using Commvault on the same machine.

Could you please advise on how to achieve this setup without any issues or conflicts between Commvault and the replication solution?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best regards,

I thought I had replied to this question but perhaps not ðŸ¤£

MSSQL in Commvault does not use VSS by default unless you opt-in or use IntelliSnap. I believe there are several pitfalls to using VSS for MSSQL vs the VDI method. So in that case there should be no issue.

Regardless, windows can concurrent VSS snapshots quite well - but you should avoid creating a VSS snapshot as the same time as another application - I’m not sure if the replication tool you are using has controls to blank out the window when VSS snapshots happen, but if not you may get a shadow in progress error. Commvault will wait / retry in most instances - but moot point if you are using the default SQL setting out the box.

Thank You Damian Andre for your reply

What about File backups ? I see VSS option and using uncheck for File Backups.

But when I test it; The windows OS system always opening VSS Service  (started status. espacially for in use files in file backups) I want to take file backup without using VSS service. (Prevent VSS backup conflicts with other backup Software)

Thank You for your valuable reply again

Yes you can disable VSS on file system backup, but you wont be able to backup any locked files or do a system state backup, so I would not recommend it - but it is possible. There is a VSS checkbox to disable on the subclient - it relates to backup of locked files.

I would try the replication using VSS together with Commvault VSS for FS backups. They should not conflict unless VSS snapshots overlap each other, or your shadow storage space is too small - in which case you can set it to no limit or increase the size (relevant article of how to configure)
