We would like to upgrade commvault from 11.24.153 to latest LTS 11.36. Please share the below queries.

  1. Is there any complexity to upgrade directly to latest LTS 11.36?
  2. We are using Active/Passive CommServe nodes with live sync. Please share a upgrade procedure with livesync enviroment.
  3. Current SQL version is 2019 - 15.0.4236.7 and Windows Server version is 2019 standard. Do we need to upgrade windows as well as SQL to 2022 or 2025 separatly or it would initiate automatically during upgrade process?

hello @Ibrahim Khalil

You can directly upgrade from version 11.24 to 11.36. For more details, please refer to the following link:
https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/upgrading_commserve_computer.html

There is no need to take any action regarding the OS level, SQL, or other third-party applications.

For Commvault with Live Sync in a high availability setup, please follow the article linked below:https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/upgrading_existing_high_availability_standby_commserve_setup.html

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

We've just gone through the update process for three environments (Running either 11.32 or 11.34).

Downloading 11.36 via the CommCell Console seemingly didn't include the necessary binaries for the SQL 2022 upgrade process, so the Download Manager was used to download a Full Media Kit, with the "Include MS SQL Server for new Installations" option selected.

We manually performed the update via Setup.exe on the CommServe, before repeating the process on the Standby CommServe. The LiveSync instances were upgraded via the CommCell Console.

In one environment, we did have issues during the SQL upgrade phase of the 11.36 update, that required we manually uninstall "Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server" and "Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server" before restarting the server and re-attempting the upgrade.

We have an outstanding issue in one environment, impacting access to Command Center directly from the CommServe (which we haven’t looked too deeply into), but overall, the process across the three environments was relatively smooth.

If your CommServe is virtual, I would recommend shutting it down and performing a snapshot before attempting the update. And as always, make sure you perform a CommServe DR backup before attempting anything!

We started the upgrade (from 11.34.x to 11.36.x) approximately 2 hours ago.  Everything has moved along, albeit slowly, without too much concern.

After the 2nd reboot, we’ve been looking at the “getting windows ready” blue screen for about 40 minutes.

Is the SQL upgrade really taking that long, or is there a reason for concern?

40 minutes seems like a long time to be staring at that screen.

Looking at the logs, our environments all seem to have updated within 2 hours, with reboots generally taking around 10 minutes.

It finally finished: the SQL upgrade (to ‘22) seems to be the time-consumer.

We started the upgrade at 2:15pm, and all services were back online three hours later.  I’m adding this just in case anyone else is experiencing this duration and needs reassurance that yes, it is proceeding.

Thanks for the space!
