I am currently running Commvault version 11.36.80, which manages a VMware vSphere cluster (version 8.0.3) through vCenter (version 8.0.3).
I would like to integrate a Proxmox cluster (version 9.0.1) into this environment.
When attempting to upgrade Commvault to version 11.40.26, I receive a prompt indicating that the SQL Server must be upgraded first.

Below are the steps performed for upgrade SQL Server:

  1. SQL Server 2022 Express Edition:
When I install SQL Server 2022 Express Edition, I am able to successfully upgrade Commvault to version 11.40.26.

  2. SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition:
When I install SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition, everything appears to complete successfully, but afterwards I am unable to upgrade Commvault to in any way.

Q1: Can Commvault version 11.40.26 run reliably with SQL Server 2022 Express Edition without any limitations or known issues? Additionally, are there any specific prerequisites or considerations for using SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition with Commvault?

Thank you for your assistance.

Subject: Issue Adding Proxmox Hypervisor in Commvault

Description of Steps Taken:

  • 3) Deployed the following virtual machines on a VMware vSphere node:

    • Commvault VM: Version 11.40.26 with SQL Server Express 2022
    • Proxmox VE VM: Version 9.0.1

  • 4) Installed the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on the Proxmox node using the LinuxVirtualServer64.tar package.

  • When attempting to add the Proxmox Hypervisor via the Add Hypervisor menu, no Access Node is available for selection.

Q2: Could someone assist in troubleshooting why the Access Node is not appearing when adding the Proxmox Hypervisor?

Thank you for your assistance.

Good Day @Ettore Caprella,

For your Question 1:
Can Commvault version 11.40.26 run reliably with SQL Server 2022 Express Edition without any limitations or known issues? Additionally, are there any specific prerequisites or considerations for using SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition with Commvault?

Answer
SQL Server 2022 Express Edition isn’t recommended for Commvault production environments because of its technical limitations.

  • Some of the Limitations:
    • Database Size Limit: SQL Express has a maximum database size of 10 GB, which is insufficient for most production CommServe deployments.
    • Resource Limits: SQL Express restricts CPU and memory usage, which can impact performance and scalability.
    • Feature Limitations: Some advanced SQL features required by Commvault (such as SQL Agent for scheduling) are not available in Express Edition.

  • Known Issues:
Using SQL Server Express Edition may lead to reliability issues, performance bottlenecks, and inability to scale as your environment grows.

Commvault strongly recommends using SQL Server Standard Edition or higher for CommServe and other core components.

Prerequisites and Considerations for SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition

  • Supported OS:
Windows Server 2016 or higher is required for SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition with Commvault 11.40.26.
  • System Requirements:
    • Minimum 2 GB RAM (more recommended for production)
    • Sufficient disk space for database growth and temp files
    • Latest Windows updates and patches
  • Installation Notes:
    • Commvault 11.40.26 will install SQL Server 2022 Standard Edition automatically for CommServe, Web Server, Workflow Engine, and Metrics Server if a lower version is detected.
    • If SQL Server 2019 Enterprise Edition is already present, Commvault will retain the existing version and not upgrade to 2022.
  • Backup Considerations:
    • Always perform a Disaster Recovery (DR) backup before upgrading SQL Server.
    • Ensure DR backup files are stored outside the Commvault installation directory to avoid accidental deletion during upgrades.
  • Upgrade Steps:
    • Uninstall older SQL Server and Commvault software as per upgrade documentation.
    • Reinstall Commvault and restore from DR backup, selecting "Use Existing Database" during setup.

For your Question 2:
Could someone assist in troubleshooting why the Access Node is not appearing when adding the Proxmox Hypervisor?

Answer
We would need to find if the needed package is installed, or not - as usually if the required packages and keys aren't added it wouldn't show up on the list.

You can try to click on Add Access node, and then check the package link if that's installed as well as below:

If it's still an issue, I would suggest logging an Support Ticket, so we can review over the details and logs to find out further, but ideally following the step should fix it up.

Hope this helps out with the information you are looking for, Let me know if any additional questions or concerns, thank you!

Commvault comes with a fully licensed version of SQL baked in - you might not have selected it for download.
