To upgrade your Commvault system from version 11.28 to 11.36 on a Windows Server 2019 with SQL Server 2016, follow these steps:

  1. Confirm the Upgrade Decision: Ensure that upgrading to version 11.36 aligns with your IT and business requirements.

  2. Review System Requirements: Verify that your CommServe machine meets the system requirements for version 11.36, including compatible operating systems and SQL versions. Refer to the https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/commserve_server_system_requirements_windows.html

  3. Perform a Disaster Recovery (DR) Backup: It's crucial to have a recent DR backup before starting the upgrade. This ensures you can restore your system to its current state if needed. See Performing a Disaster Recovery (DR) Backup.

  4. Download the 11.36 Media Kit: Obtain the version 11.36 software from the Commvault Store. Ensure you download the correct packages for your environment.

  5. Plan the Upgrade: Schedule the upgrade process during a time that minimizes impact on your operations.

  6. Disable Scheduler Activity: Temporarily disable the Scheduler to prevent new jobs from starting during the upgrade. This can be done from the CommCell Console.

  7. Upgrade Sequence:

    • CommServe: Start the upgrade with the CommServe server. This is critical as it manages the configuration and operation of the entire Commvault environment.
    • Media Agents: After successfully upgrading CommServe, proceed with upgrading the Media Agents in your environment.
    • Client Computers: Finally, upgrade the client computers. Ensure all clients are compatible with the new version.
  8. Verify the Upgrade: After the upgrade, verify that all components are functioning correctly, and that the system is stable.

  9. Re-enable Scheduler Activity: Once you confirm everything is operational, re-enable the Scheduler to resume normal operations.

  10. Monitor the Upgrade: Closely monitor the upgrade process for any errors and ensure that no backup jobs are running during the upgrade by suspending active jobs and disabling the scheduler.

For detailed procedures, refer to the official documentation: CommServe Upgrade, Media Agents Upgrade.
