Question

Data Aging and Cycles

Forum|alt.badge.img+6

If we back up a new server one time and let's say it is 15 TB. We then release the license for said server, how long does it take for that for that 15 TB to return to the license? Is it based of the data aging jobs that run, or is there a certain number of cycles Commvault goes through to make sure the 15 TB is never going to come back?

Hello @TP_Erickson

A license is in regards to Front end TB that you are protecting. We do not charge or consume a license for you to hold on your data that has already been protected. So when you release a license on a machine, it will do nothing to the data at rest. That data will carry on following the rules you had set for it around retention and cycles like nothing has changed.

If you delete the client after releasing the license then you will get the data back as quickly as Commvault can take it. A data Aging job will run and mark it all as aged and then the MA will start cleaning it up.

Kind regards

Albert Williams

Worth also mentioning a client/subclient with its backup activity disabled or license released should not consume any license - The already backed up data will age as per StoragePolicy/Plan retention

What my management is looking for is how long does it take to say when i disable or release the license for a client, how long does it take for Commvault to know when it has been released for license?

I have seen it in the past where we release a license and after a certain number of days it shows less TB in the Commvault license (big drop off to the client was at least 10 + TB). This was in the days of V1 indexing, so i dont know now with V2 indexing, if a client is released for license, does it automaticially release the license, for it waits for a data aging job to confirm the information?

Disable Activity on a Client does not remove it from licensing.
Disable Activity on a Subclient does remove it from licensing.
Release License for Client does remove it from licensing.

Thanks,
Scott

It should be aware of the license drop as soon as a Data Aging job runs, which should be schedules daily anyway.

For any data within retention, it should age the jobs according to their configure retention. But as soon as the license is removed (as per Scott’s details), it will stop accounting for license.
