Hello,

we have scenario that we have two Media Agent in an OnPrem Location for customer.

ma01 is used for infrastructure Backup mainly VSA Backup etc.(direct connection to CS)

ma02 shoud be used for Agent Backup (SQL ;SAP etc..) in Customer Network (direct connection to Clients / Connection to CS via Topology)

ma01 with VSA Backup is working fine.

ma02 if we select manually for Agent Backup also works fine, but for scheduled Jobs always ma01 is selected and not ma02.

So we found following Additional setting:

https://documentation.commvault.com/additionalsetting/details?name=PreferredMediaAgentGroup

“ PreferredMediaAgentGroup“

We activate this Additional Setting on both groups for MA and Agents with same value “ma02”

but it does not work still ma01 is picked.

Question: Has anybody used this setting or can explain what we do wrong the explanation in documentation is not that clear: https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/setting_up_client_and_mediaagent_pairing_for_data_protection_operations.html

Or maybe I missed something. Thx for any hint.

BR

Marcel

I can't comment on the Additional Setting, but Schedule Policies can be configured to use a specific data path (via Advanced, Data Path). I feel like that would be masking a wider issue, though.

Based on your description, if the MediaAgent MA01 is only able to communicate with your infrastructure environment, and MediaAgent MA02 is only able to communicate with the Agent-based clients, I would suggest that each MediaAgent should be configured with a dedicated library, storage pool, and storage policy.

Thank you @Erase4ndReuseMedia for your answer. So we only use Plans no “Schedule Policy” anymore. The “ma01” can communicate with both Infra and Agents, but has to use proxies for talking to Agents, therefore we want preferred use “ma02”. Yes I know we can configure different Storage Pools but this is what we not want. We want both MAs sharing the same Storage Pool, but “ma02” should be used for Agent Backup. That is what this Additional Setting exactly should do, but somehow it does not work, if I select “ma02” manually it works fine.

Maybe someone here already used this setting or can help?

Thanks and BR

Marcel
