I am setting up Exchage Online Metallic backups..
i see if i follow the express configuration there is no need to create a service acccount but the custom config requires that. Is there a reason the express config does not require that and do i need that created is i use express configuration. I tested and backups worked fine without it, also restores.
Also same situaton for sharepoint online. Is the service account required for the express configuration?

A service account is not required for backup, restore, or discovery operations of Mailboxes, only for backup, restore, and discovery operations for Public Folders. One is not created during the Express Configuration as majority of M365 environments to do not need it configured. It is still documented in the Custom Configuration steps however in the event Public Folder backups are needed.
In most instances the Express Configuration is preferred and recommended method to deploy Azure Apps for the M365 apps.
