we are using office 365 app, and we have Commvault on-prem.

Q: can we apply cleanup policy on exchange online?

Best answer by Chris Hollis

@Amr Shboul if you are using the exchange mailbox agent with on-prem AD, you can configure cleanup policies: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/cleaning_up_messages_using_exchange_mailbox_01.html and run cleanup jobs.

However, if you are using the M365 Exchange Application as per: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/create_office_365_plan_for_exchange_online.html

This now leverages an ‘office 365’ plan which doesn’t provide the ability to clean up (stub) messages in m365.

So it depends on the agent you have configured in your environment (based on your description, it’s the first one).

Regards,

Chris

@Amr Shboul Hello So if I am reading this correctly you have an onprem Exch server as well as some mailboxes in O365?

You can assign a cleanup policy to both onprem and online, however using a cleanup policy is uncommon for Exch online as you normally have a very large amount of storage provided so its unlikely that you need to stub those mailboxes. What/why is the plan for stubbing?

Hello @Chris Hollis & @Scott Reynolds ,

So, in case of (only) Exchange Online environment, Cleanup Retention Policies are not applicable, is that right?

Best regards,
Nikos

@Nikos.Kyrm Correct, generally you would not want to cleanup O365

In current versions the Office 365 Plans cover all O365 agents and only provide the correct options.

Hello @Scott Reynolds

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, we're exploring the possibility to use Exchange Cleanup Policies to archive older emails in our Exchange Online mailboxes (similar to the functionality of Enterprise Vault).

In Exchange mailbox Plan, I see Clean up polices, but are these supported for o365 Exchange online mailboxes ?

Hello again,

Following up, I got the a reply from Commvault Support (Case: 241018-201) about Cleanup Policies for Exchange online.

I was checking the articles and discuss internally. We can't perform clean job with office 365 plan. The office 365 will be limited to the archiving and retention.

You can't use the user mailbox clean job for exchange online mailboxes.

Hope to help!

Best regards,
Nikos
