Hi there,

We have a virtual machine with SQL Server being backed up with backup type ‘File System and Application Consistent (Needs VMWare Tools installed)’. This backup is succeeding. If we change to using Application Aware processing, will a new full backup be required - and will this backup be deduplicated as normal? Or will this require a net new backup that is not deduplicated against the existing historical?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @justin000

A new full backup will be intitiated. This is unavoidable and it will not be tied to the original ‘file system and application consistent’ jobs.

When switching to app-aware, note that the software pushes out an agent to the client in order to carry out the application snapshot, this is documented here: https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/14309_application_aware_backup_process.html

If you are also using the Synthetic FULL backup type, please expect jobs to auto convert to FULL too, please refer to: https://kb.commvault.com/article/62824

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Chris
