Multi-Stream support for Vmware Full VM Restore

Forum|alt.badge.img

Does Commvault support or plan to add support for Multi-Streaming during Full VM Restore in VMware?

For example, a VM with 4 ‘vmdk’ files can use 4 streams during restoration.

We are running ver 11.24 and see that a single stream is used during the restore which slows restores down, especially for larger VMs.

We could of course use Live VM recovery but that does not help if the VM is running any resource-heavy app.

@Ameya Bapat@Maciek ,

One stream per vmdk feature is enabled by default for single VM FR36 onwards.

Best Regards,

Sebastien

Hi @Ameya Bapat ,

This was enabled in FR25 / FR26. So it is enabled in FR28.

Best Regards,

Sebastien

Hi,

With async writes during restore, a single VMDK can have multiple outstanding IO requests. With this Full VM restores from FR25/FR26 will be faster.

Gopinath

Hello,

is this somewhere described? I am running FR28 and while restoring 1 VM with 10 vmdks I can see only one stream utilized.

Maciej

Hi @Maciek ,

We are still using 1 stream / VM, however as Gopinath said, with async writes during restore, a single VMDK can have multiple outstanding IO requests. With this Full VM restores from FR25/FR26 will be faster.

Best Regards,

Sebastien

Hello Sebastien,

It’s enabled by default right after upgrading to FR36 or it needs to be manually configured by Additional Setting or other option?

Kind regards,

Maciej

@Sebastien Merluzzi

Nice feature; I’m sure a lot of customers were waiting for it. Do you know where it’s described?

I would expect it here https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/multi_stream_restore_operations.html but it’s missed.

Regards,

Ralph

Do you happen to have a link to the official announcement that this was enabled/added? Also can you share results? What is the difference that you have seen in the testing/labs?
