Difference between "Protected Application Size" and "Total Size On Media" in Reports

We’re currently establishing a yearly reporting for backup size of our systems.

Can someone explain the difference between "Protected Application Size" and "Total Size On Media" in Commvault Reports?

1. Protected Application Size: This refers to the amount of application data that has been protected by the backup job. It represents the size of the protected data on the client before compression and deduplication. It includes aged data and pruned data. For virtual machines (VMs), the application size is equivalent to the backup size.

 

2. Total Size On Media: This refers to the total amount of active data that is saved on storage media. It includes all storage policy copies on all media types, excluding aged data. For storage policy copies with deduplication enabled, the media size for each job is calculated based on the average deduplication ratio of the copy. The calculation for media size is: media size = application size * average deduplication ratio per copy.

 

It's important to note that the calculation of Total Size On Media can vary depending on the deduplication settings of the associated storage policies. If deduplication is not enabled, the Total Size On Media will be similar to the Protected Application Size. However, if deduplication is enabled, the Total Size On Media may differ due to the deduplication ratio.
