Best approach to backup big windows file servers

Hello,

I was wondering what would be the best option or settings to backup windows file servers.

I see that block-level is an option, with a few restrictions.

I also see that, creating multiple subclients for the folders under the file server drive could speed up the process.

Is that is? Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Hi @PedroRocha

Thanks for this information. Based on this, Intellisnap / Block Level solution would work best as per your requirements.

Thanks,

Sparsh

Hi @PedroRocha,

You're spot on! In addition, depending on the configuration you could also look into using IntelliSnap or NAS. Adding the File Server as a NAS ()https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/119323_nas_file_servers.html allows you to specify multiple access nodes / proxies to divide the load across multiple systems. You will have to take into account that adding more resources normally also means a higher impact on the storage offering of the VM and/or the underlying storage, so make sure you keep an eye on this.

Hope this helps!

Onno

Hi @PedroRocha

What is the data type you want to protect? Is it structured or unstructured data? What are the size of files in average & cumulative size? Do you need the capability to filter out some data from the volume? Is it a local volume or filer? Are there large number of small files? Or, all there extremely big application files?

Currently, the question is a bit vague with lots of possibilities. Perhaps, you can help narrow it down, by providing some detailed requirements.

Thanks,

Sparsh

Hi!

Its Windows FS data, unstructured, total size is 3TB+, some have 15TB. avg file size around 1MB.

No filter needed for now.

files are inside a drive (RDM presented to VMs)

Thanks a lot

regards,

Pedro
