Question About Unable to create a snapshot on virtual machine [] because another task is already running on the virtual machine. The job will got to pending and be retried.

Hello, good morning, how are you?

I wanted to share a problem I'm facing in a client's Commvault environment.

Their Commvault only does DR, it's currently on version 11.32, replication is done from VMware on-premise as the source to Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE) as the destination. There's a machine that hasn't replicated for a long time because it can't back up due to the problem below.

Erro code [91:460]
Unable to create a snapshot on virtual machine [] because another task is already running on the virtual machine. The job will got to pending and be retried.

I don't understand what it could be, the machine can't do full or incremental backups, we've already looked in VMware and there are no paralyzed tasks, in the replication monitor it has the SLA status as "not met" and the status is "Sync Enabled".

If you could help, I would be very grateful. The machine hasn't replicated for over 5 days.

Hi Alvaro,

That error is indicating that there’s a VMWare task persisting against the VM. What I might suggest, to rule out anything from the Commvault end, can you manually create and delete a snapshot from VMWare on that specific VM?

My guess is you will see the same answer from VMWare as Commvault gets these error messages from VMWare API responses. If you are able to create and delete snapshots in VMWare I would suggest raising a support incident so a support engineer can review your logging.

Hi Jace, thanks a lot for the reply!

Dude, I haven't checked on VMware yet. As far as I know, there weren't any snapshots available for the VM there either, but I can test if it's possible to create one manually there!

And when I'm trying to replicate the machine with a "replicate now" command, Commvault shows this warning - After the most recent backup job, the replication job completed or is still running for this schedule -

And I noticed that the VMadmin jobs and backup jobs for the machine had the job number and an exclamation mark.

They're in jobs that ended with errors that would be backups in the replication groups. All machines were backed up except the one with the problem. And it also says which job was retained. What could it be? I don't know.
