We currently have a single Windows Server 2019 running Commvault 11.28.129 (serves as both commserve/media).  I see that our MSSQL is version 2016 ( product version 13.0.6455.2).

So I normally download regular maintenance releases on a jumpbox and then upload it to a file share location and then on the commserve I do a copy via TOOLS | ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE | Copy Software.

What is the best approach to upgrade to 11.32.x.   Do I just download both the Windows & linux latest 11.32.x update  (we only have RHEL & windows clients - about 18 total) ??   Then copy the 11.32.x over to our file share were I can then do a copy via commserve  TOOL | ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE | COPY SOFTWARE? Then just perform a “Upgrade Software” via commcell | Tools | Add/Remove software?

Basically can I upgrade the Long Term Support release of 11.32.x via the commcell?

Or do I have to download the main 11.32 package from the commvault support site - Downloads & Packages | v11 Download Manager & Additional Software | v11 Software Release Lifecycle and select the “ Software distribution set” ?

Also an important question is  since we are on 11.28.129 w/ MSSQL 2016 by upgrading to 11.32.x does the MSSQL software get upgraded as well?  to MSSQL 2019??  or is this not the case.

Thanks

Hi @bc1410 ,

The Version 11.32.X supports the Microsoft SQL Server 2016 build with Service Pack 3,GDR for SP3

Please find more details on the below article link:

If you are planning to update the CommCell environment to 11.32.X, I suggest to refer the below articles before you plan to update the environment, as these will be useful and could help to clear the questions.

Thanks @Pratik for the info / links.

So a little more involved to upgrade the MS SQL to 2019.   If we wanted to go that route.   Looks as if our current MSSQL 2016 is supported as you stated in 11.32.x.

I had the impression that maybe the MSSQL got updated automatically when performing a Major version upgrade.  But guess that’s a wrong assumption.

@Pratik  or anyone else

I havent had much success in the past with upgrades.  I know Pratik sent this link https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/software_upgrades_updates_and_uninstallation.html

My plan as mentioned earlier is to go to 11.32.x…   Is It BEST to download the 11.32.72 via commcell “Download and Sync Cache Options” and then perform a “upgrade Software” on the commserve client via the commcell?

Or  Do I need to download the 11.32 distribution package and upgrade that way.

What is the recommended approach?

My Last upgrade (11.28)  in which I did it via commcell appeared to complete but it actually didnt.  As when I tied in support they stated the upgrade didn't complete fully and suggested to run a RESUME if not a  REPAIR.    Where I can I look to see that the upgrade finished 100%.  ??

Hi @bc1410

Thanks for the details.

Both ways: “From Software cache on CommCell Console” or From “Direct download from the Site and then update” are fine, there should not be any issues with the update with any process.

Please ensure you have the latest DR backup available handy, and have proper plan of action for upgrade:
1. Take the Full DR backup and keep it available if needed.
2. Ensure the Scheduler is disabled/paused on CommCell level
3. Suspend any running backups.
4. Ensure the CommServe machine meet all the System and Hardware requirements.

Please refer the Documents and steps suggested in them.
