We have (and have had) VM’s that are “doing a lot” and the snapshot that occurs for the VM backups causes the application to see a “hiccup”. There’s always a query from the application team to “find out what's happening” and it always works out to just “stop using CommVault to back this up via VMware backup, use the client backup instead” the issue disappears and everyone is happy, except me…
After I take the VM out of VMware backups, I need to add a client.. adding the client with the same hostname/display name results in an a pop up/error: "duplicate entry. Client [server name here] already exists. Try with a different client name’
We have been getting around this by naming the client something like ‘servername_1”. in some cases, we have “servername_3” as it looks like the client was moved back and forth between vmware and client backups several times…
is there a ‘better” or recommended way to handle this where we don’t have the “servername_1” in our client computer lists? it isn't causing any real harm that I can see other than the backup history being fragmented between differently named clients (and decommed VM client) every time we move it around from vm → regular client → vm → regular client. I’ve read on the foums about merging client histories but it seems like its only relating to VM backups (and host name changes on the VM/OS side).
