Recently installed the commvault client on a linux file server. The admin of that server noticed that two files are taking up quite a bit of space on the boot drive. Files DCInc.cvf and DCTot.cvf which are in /opt/commvault/iDataAgent64/jobResults/2/2009. They are taking up nearly 18GB of space. I haven’t found a doc telling me what they are used for yet. Anyone have an idea what they are used for and if they will continue to grow?

Hi,

These collect files are created and updated during the scan phase of the backup to determine what should be included in the backup. If your server has millions of files then the size needed for your jobResults directory will increase. Here is a link to determine (approx.) how much space you will need: https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/6599_job_results_directory_disk_space_calculation.html.

We normally have a separate file system on Linux servers for the Commvault installation directory to prevent the boot drive / root folder to be filled up

Thanks Patrick. I submitted this question to support as well and here is their response in case anyone stumbles down this rabbit hole.

...the files DCInc.cvf and DCTot.cvf are parts of the Job Results and required for Incremental backups, this directory contains the following data:

  • Metadata for all jobs in the CommCell environment.

  • Backup data for the CommServe database.

  • Copies of the log files generated after running the SendLogFiles utility.

Here is how the space needed is calculated:
