We are migrating VMs from VMware to Hyperv and after migration we are doing some changes in the backup configuration like creating multiple Virtualization clients for different Hyperv cluster, VMs are moved and backed up in to separate sub-client. My question is after

  1. After migration from VMware to Hyper-V does the first backup converts to Full backup?
  2. If the sub-client is renamed does the next backup converts to Full or only if the clients are re-associated with different policy.

Hi @Kamesh ,

  • When you restore a virtual machine from VMware to Hyper-V, the VM backup will be treated as a new full backup in Commvault. This is because the hypervisor platform has changed, and Commvault treats Hyper-V VMs as distinct from VMware VMs.
  • As a result, the initial backup after migration will be full, which will require more storage capacity in your Disk or Cloud library. Incremental backups will follow afterward, but the first backup of the restored Hyper-V VM will need more space.

Best Regards,

Sebastien
