Converting from VMware to Nutanix AHV

Hello Commvault Community!

I come today with the problem of virtual machine recovery by converting from VMware to Nutanix AVH.

The Customer runs on the 11.20.85 environment. It has two Hypervisors configured - VMware and Nutanix AVH. Both have backup jobs performed before, so they are working properly.

The Customer needs to recover the VM from VMware to Nutanix AVH (from the CommCell Console level - according to the documentation, this is the only available option - although if we look, we will find the procedure for Command Center, although it is described that it is not supported) using this procedure:

*Converting from VMware to Nutanix AHV (Commcell Console - Customer attempts a recovery with this procedure

https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11_sp20/article?p=97686.htm

*Cross-Hypervisor Restores (Virtual Machine Conversion) - confirmation that it is supported

https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11_sp20/article?p=30891.htm

*Converting to Nutanix AHV - procedure to Command Center, although the article above describes it as not supported

https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11_sp20/article?p=120368.htm

Customer tries to recover the VM from CommCell Console and the jobs ends with an error:

“31706 vsvRestore::getRestoreOptions_vmConversion() - VM Conversion is not supported from [VMware vCenter] to [Nutanix Acropolis]”

At first I thought that the problem is that Commvault sees not Nutanix AVH but Nutanix Acropolis, but the client confirmed to me that it was configured as Nutanix AVH and so it is visible in the environment.

I looked at the logs and in the vsrst.log, I cannot see the potential cause, other logs do not tell me what the problem may be. If any log can direct me please let me know.

Do you have an idea where I can look for the cause of the problem? Unfortunately, I can't see much in the logs, apart from the information that it is not supported.

Thanks&Regards,
Kamil

HI @MichaelCapon

It turned out that the problem was actually in an added key on CommServe (VSA for VMware) - “newRestore”.

Thank you for your help, the matter is solved :)

Regards,

Kamil

Hi @Kamil,

I’d suggest checking if you have any Additional Settings applied to the CommServe or VSA Proxy here and ensure they are on the same software version.

If that doesn’t help then raise a case and share the case number with me.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi @MichaelCapon

The client has a couple of AdditionalSettings on CommServe - additionalsettings.png

There arent for VMware VSA and for Nutanix AVH VSA.

Kamil

Thanks @Kamil

Remove the “newRestore” Additional Setting and give the VM Conversion another go :relaxed:

Michael
