Question

Guest File Restore Only Showing C Drive

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

I seem to have multiple servers that only show the C drive when doing a guest file restore. If I mount a whole disk I can see all the others. I have other servers in the same backup Plan that work fine, have very similar servers that work fine, I can’t tell why it isn’t showing. Anyone had this? I’ve logged a ticket but not much of a response so far

For me, when restoring a Virtual Server’s Guest Files and Folders, in the ‘Browse and Restore Option’ window, I have to go to the ‘Advanced Options’ tab and select a Windows MediaAgent for ‘Use MediaAgent’. If I don’t select a Windows MediaAgent, I only see C.

@lzimmerman I’m not using the agent, this is through the portal interface, I’ve got 2 servers, exactly the same, same backup Plan, one shows me all drives C, F,G,H the other just shows me the C

The disks are online on the server and in use

OK so after much digging i’ve actually narrowed this down after going through our whole estate, this comes down to any SQL server running

Operating system

Windows (Windows Server 2022 Datacenter)

Others are fine, plenty of other SQL servers show all drives on guest files, any SQL servers on that OS don’t show the drives

Hello @DaveM By any chance the drives which does not show up are deduplicated on OS?

Also, what's the OS of the source VM and the OS of media agent you are using to browse? We usually recommend that the source VM and the MA OS should be same or MA OS to be higher.

Best,

The Media Agent that you are using for granular restore is Windows 2022 or lower? what kind of filesystem do you have on those disks? are they dynamic or basic disks?

@Ledoesp I’m not using a media agent, these azure VM's so full snaps of the servers are taken so all other servers have no issues when I choose guest file restore , they show me all drives, these ones do not

I understand you are using IntelliSnap for Azure VM’s so a Media Agent is configured although no streaming backup is done. Operating system of the Media Agent and the type of disks and type of filesystem configured on them are relevant to find the why.
