Hello,

I have Commvault server  simpana version 11.28.68, and a few Virtual machines (VMWare).

I have a problem with browse specific file from this Virtual machines from backup which is on Tape library.

I read that live browse is not allowed for simpana version 11.28.68 and index version2. Is there any solution for this problem?

Best regards,

Hello @elizabeta

Please let me know if you will be able to copy the backup from tape to disk and then try the restore?

Also, what is the issue you are getting while browsing the data from tapes? If you navigate to backup history of the vm snapshot sub client > Right click the backup from which data needs to be restores > Browse and Restore > List Media.

After clicking on list media it should tell you which media you want to list, one is for browsing, one is for restoring. Could you please confirm if you have all the tapes required for restore after click on each one of the option?

Hello,

Is there any other solution for restore without copying the backup from tape to disk?

As Rajiv said, The Job would need to be copied from Tape back to Disk Library in order to perform a LiveBrowse.

To do this, you would need to configure a Selective Copy: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/13907_selective_copy.html

Then Select the Jobs to Copy: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/14000_manually_select_job_to_copy.html

Then run the Aux Copy Job.

Once copied, You can then LiveBrowse from this Job by picking the Job from SP Copy or setting Copy Precedence in Browse options.

Alternatively if the VM Disk containing the file is not too large, You could restore the Disk to a VM and manually extract the file(s) you need.

Michael

Hello @elizabeta

In order to restore files, you can restore the disk and attach it to a different VM and the procedure for it is  mentioned here: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/87274_attaching_disk_to_existing_vm_for_vmware.html

Thank you for your answers.

I read somewhere that Live browse for VM backup on Tape library will be possible in simpana new Feature release?

Is tihis correct?

Hello @elizabeta

Live file recovery is only supported for recovery from backups using magnetic disk/cloud libraries, and is not supported from backups to tape libraries or virtual tape libraries.

It is unsupported due to hardware limitation and is unlikely to become supported in future releases.

Hello,

Just one question, when I create Selective copy I can select destination only on Tape library, not to disk.

When I select only one backup job to copy, for example a full backup that is about 180GB, do I have to copy the entire full backup to disk?

It doesn't make sense if I want to restore only one file of several MB

Best regards,
Elizabeta
