Questions about VSA Proxies for Nutanix AHV

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions regarding the use of VSA proxies.

We have a medium-sized Commvault on-premise infrastructure with around 1,000 virtual machines and 100 TB of consumed storage. We are running on Nutanix AHV, and my colleague has deployed five Linux VSA proxies and five Windows VSA proxies. However, these proxies are sized as small or even extra small in some cases.

I don’t really understand the need for so many VSA proxies.

  • Is it really useful to have that many?
  • And is there any benefit in having Windows VSA proxies? From my understanding, Linux proxies are better integrated with Nutanix AHV, right?

I also noticed that during full backups, the proxies experience a very high load average, often exceeding 8 or 9, while they only have 2 vCPUs.

What do you think about this setup?
Would it be better to increase the resources on the Linux VSA proxies and remove the Windows ones?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

hello @maxime.mimran

Both RHEL and Windows are working fine with Nutanix. I believe your environment size is extra large, with around 100TB of data written to storage (after deduplication and compression).

note : above size by front-end TB (before deduplication and compression).

Before removing the Windows proxies, make sure they’re not being used for services like O365 or AD, etc. Once confirmed, you can proceed with your plan to increase Linux resources and temporarily disable the 5 Windows proxies. Monitor the performance, and if everything runs smoothly, you can remove them.

If you run into any issues -hopefully not- just update the topic

Hi @Mohamed Ramadan

Thanks for your reply.

When you said size by front-end TB is it the total application Size on commvault (before dedup and compression)?

If it’s this value we have 700.23 TB ! 😵

after deduplication we have 141.20 TB

So we need to upgrade vsa hardware.

Kind regards,

Max

hello Max
no problem dude

This is what I think because, on average, Commvault saves between 70% to 90% of data 😅 (after the dedup and compression)

As I mentioned, you can go ahead with your plan and just disable the Windows machines. If you run into any performance issues, you can enable them again

Hi,
Such a great news !

Yes exactly, our deduplication saves between  85 and 90% 😁

Thank's a lot for your advises !

Have a nice day :)
