@Alexis
Greetings from Commvault Support.
Yes, you can setup a proxy between client and MA
We are not sure its a cloud or local proxy setup which your planning to do.
This for Cloud proxy configuration
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/configuring_http_proxy.html
This for VSA proxy configuration and requirements, ( Both Vmware and Hyper-v its there )

Configuring a Proxy Computer for CIFS and NFS IntelliSnap Backups at Subclient Level

For your above question number 1 to 3 answer available in the above mention docs
4. Can a PROXY accommodate an unlimited number of clients, or is there a maximum limit to the number of clients it can support?
We cant mention a specific number on this, its depends on following factor,
CPU size on Proxy
Client data size,
How much data is transferring,
Network speed, storage usage and capacity to handle streams,
For example :
In terms of Sizing VSA Proxies, a VSA can have 10 Streams per CPU and 1 Stream per 100MB RAM.

Backup Workload Distribution
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.20/backup_workload_distribution.html
Theoretically if you backed up all of the 1500 VM’s (in FULL) at exactly the same time in a short backup window, you’d need 1500 streams. - So 15x Large proxies in theory “could” cover this Full Backup using SAN Transport, but you would need Media Agents and Storage to be able to handle this many streams at the same time.
This one is bit hard to say how much many client it will support. its completely depends on the client data usage / backup and how long backup is running.
Please do let us know if you have any query on the same.
Hi, everyone.
The purpose of this request is to ascertain whether it is feasible to back up a system that is located remotely from the MediaAgent. To facilitate this, I am considering the implementation of a PROXY server between the MediaAgent and the client. It is my understanding that the PROXY server would serve as an intermediary to handle the backup process for the client connected to the PROXY.
Could you please confirm if this approach is viable?
Thank you
Hi,
In other words, I would also like to determine if it is possible to perform both backup and restore operations for a client that has a PROXY server situated between it and the MediaAgent. Due to the significant distance between the client and the MediaAgent, we will employ a PROXY server to optimize the connection.
@Alexis what is your reasoning why you want to implement a proxy between the two components? I think you are actually referring to a network gateway instead of a proxy. @Wasim already shared the link to the documentation containing information about network gateways.
As other have said before, if you are referring to a Proxy in the sense of a Network Gateway, yes, you can make the configuration as per the information previously shared by @Wasim
Hello everyone,
We need to clarify a misunderstanding. We are decommissioning an old MediaAgent and migrating the backups to a new MediaAgent. However, this new MediaAgent is located in a secure network, which prevents clients from connecting to it directly due to being in a different domain. We do not intend to change the clients' domain.
Therefore, we require a proxy server to act as an intermediary between the clients and the new MediaAgent. This proxy server will facilitate communication between the clients and the MediaAgent, despite being in different domains.
My inquiry is: Should I implement a Network Gateway as described in the following documentation link?
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/network_gateway_in_perimeter_network.html
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Yes, this can be achieved using a network gateway combined with a specific network topology. See also the documentation around this subject: https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/essential/network_topologies.html If you go to the wizard in Command Center you should see an illustration showing the tunnel flow.
I am planning to add my new MediaAgent that is in a different domain from the CommServe. Consequently, they cannot communicate with each other. To proceed with adding the new MA, should I first configure a machine as a Network Gateway?
If so, should I follow the steps from this documentation?
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/setting_up_commvault_network_gateway.html
Thank you.
Providing the Network Gateway is going to be a client with access to both networks and it is going to act as a bridge, yes, that is the correct documentation to follow
