Error Code: [17:179] - Failed to scan the content (File System)

Hello,

Lately we’ve been seeing the “Error Code: [17:179]
Description: Following errors occurred while scanning: [Failed to scan the content]” popping up on some of our Windows file system backups, causing them to fail.

The subclients of said servers have no content specified, they backup everything. I’ve also tested with only backing up drive C:\ but the same error appears. When I check for the VSS state they all appear “Stable” and show “No error”. I’ve also tried running backup without the “System State” option just in case.

Looking at the logs, I can’t really see a real reason as to why this would happen.

Has anyone faced this issue before? What else can be attempted to fix this?

Thank you for your help and have a nice day.

Best regards,

Try this - create a file on the server you’re trying to backup in root of C:\ -- Ex. C:\testbackupfile.txt

Select that file as the ONLY content for backup.

Run a backup against that subclient - see if its successful or fails.

If it fails - right click on the file and give ‘everyone’ rights - try it again.

If that works - you may need to add the account commvault services are running under as ‘backup admin’.

If it doesn't work - look at the FILESCAN.LOG on the Windows server you’re trying to backup. Look for the job ID that matches your recent attempt and see if you can glean anything from that or if you’re comfortable post the output here.
