What exactly is the purpose and functionality of the "AnalyticsServer" client?

Title says it all. This client is in my left sidebar of the Java Console, containing an Agent called “BigDataApps”. The install date is in April 2018, which is when we set up Commvault in our environment - I was not present that for, and none of my team knows what it is either. Is it some default sub-component of Commvault? I looked in the Documentation Search and besides references to REST API, I can’t find anything definitive.

Hi Zach,

Hope you’re doing well..

The *_AnalyticsServer index server is a pseduoclient entity created as part of a previous initiative to perform data analytics/insights within your environment. If you’re not aware of this being performed within the environment and that there are no requirements for this, you can look to have the pseudoclient decommissioned.

Note, Data Analytics specifically has since been deprecated (Link: https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/deprecation_notice_for_data_analytics.html) and users have now moved onto File Storage Optimisation (Link: https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/file_storage_optimization.html) as part of initial migration efforts.

Thanks for the explanation Jon. That’s good enough for me. Nope, we never used it.

Hi,
I apologize for bringing up the old case, but it fits the topic.

As you have already mentioned, the analytics server has been deprecated.
We upgraded yesterday to version 11.36 and now it is active again...

Do we now have to deactivate the analytics server again with every upgrade, or is there an option that can be set to keep it deactivated even after upgrades?
