Updated advisory as of July 17, 2026. We will continue to provide new updates and guidance as we get closer to the September release milestones. - Commvault Support & Community teams

For customers and partners backing up Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online in your environments, we have published a new KB article with more details about this transition, actions Commvault is taking, and recommendations for different customer segments. We suggest clicking “subscribe for updates” and we will also provide a heads up here in the Community and through direct outreach to impacted customers later in the summer.

What is Changing?

Microsoft is making a phased transition from the 20-year-old EWS architecture to the modern, REST-based Microsoft Graph API. This shift enhances security via OAuth-based authentication and provides a more unified architecture across Microsoft 365.

To ensure long-term compatibility, security, and supportability, Commvault is adopting Microsoft Graph for Exchange Online protection. Because Microsoft Graph does not yet support every Exchange Online workload, Commvault will use a hybrid transport model until the Microsoft transition is complete.

Microsoft EWS Retirement Timeline

Per Microsoft, below is the revised planned transition timeline for EWS. (Note they have removed the previously communicated June 2026 milestone to phase out some EWS access.)

  • October 1, 2026: Phased disablement of EWS begins (tenant-controlled).
  • April 1, 2027: EWS permanently retired for all Exchange Online tenants.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: This change applies only to Exchange Online. On-premises Exchange Server environments are not impacted by this deprecation.

Planned Commvault Milestones & Timings

We understand that your backup continuity is non-negotiable. Our hybrid approach and timeline is intended to ensure your environment is "Graph-ready" before Microsoft begins the phased disablement in October 2026 and also that there is continuity for workloads not yet fully supported by Graph.

We recommend reading the latest KB article for details by deployment type, but below is a brief summary.

For Commvault Cloud SaaS (Metallic) customers, Commvault will automatically enable the Graph API as the primary mode of transport beginning in September. From the customer side, the only action that should need to be taken is verification of permissions against the Azure applications you have configured. A small number of customers using legacy single-tenant Azure apps may need to do additional configuration of permissions as noted in the KB article, and you will receive a notification in-app.

For self-hosted / on-premises software customers with Exchange Online, Commvault plans to release a hotfix cycle for 11.44 in early September where, similar to SaaS, the Graph API will be enabled by default. To continue protecting your Exchange Online mailboxes after Microsoft retires EWS in April 2027, you will need to upgrade to Commvault 11.44 or later. Once deployed, the only action required by the customer is to verify the Azure apps being used for the workload have the appropriate permissions to use the Graph API. There is more detail around these steps in the KB article here

Recommended Actions for Administrators to Prepare

Review the new KB article here for more detailed guidance and recommended actions by deployment type, including steps related to verifying and/or reauthorizing Azure AD applications where and when needed.

Dependency on the Microsoft Ecosystem

As a Microsoft partner, Commvault’s development timeline is inextricably linked to Microsoft’s API release schedule. While Graph is the future, Microsoft has acknowledged that it does not yet have full feature parity with EWS. This is an ongoing process and subject to further changes as Microsoft continues to evolve their release plans and dates.

The previous Commvault KB article contains more general context around the Microsoft transition and timings.

Stay Tuned

We will continue to share updates, timelines, and guidance here and through the new KB article

@Arvind  thanks for sharing that with us.

We currently still have Exchange On-Prem Backups. Do you know if this change to MS Graph API will change in any way the overall infrastructure needed to maintain Backups from Exchange (Access Nodes, WebServer, Index Servers etc) or that will remain the same? Just looking for some additional details.

Thank you

Hey @dude — love the name, by the way 😉

Short answer: There are no changes to your Commvault infrastructure.

The move from EWS to Microsoft Graph only changes how Exchange data is accessed, not your overall architecture.

Your existing components — Access Nodes, Web Server, Index Server(s), and Media Agents — remain the same.

This is purely an API transition, where we’ll use Microsoft Graph instead of EWS for Exchange Online operations.

Just make sure you’re running the latest Commvault Feature or Maintenance Release [As it's released], which includes the new Graph API integration.

@dude

This affects EWS for Exchange Online only. Microsoft has not made any announcements for the deprecation of EWS for on-premises deployments.

https://support.commvault.com/Article/Details/89439

As there is no Graph API available to On-premises deployments through all versions as of 2025, I wouldn't expect a change to be made there.

We have Commvault and Exchange Online backup (all O365 backup actually), how can I determine if i’m using any EWS connection within my current setup? I tried to look into the documentations, but it was not very clear for me, sorry about If missed something. Could someone help to understand that? thanks in advance.

For exchange your are using EWS as graph support has not been implemented yet. Per the original post it’s on target for US summer 2026 -- most likely around June timeframe.

So if i understand correctly, regardless of if it’s SaaS-Metallic o365 or on-prem exchange, there is no manual intervention required from the administrators, as long as the (planned) summer release installed by the time October 2026 comes?

Since the change over to the new API is in development, there isn't any clarity yet if there are additional instructions beyond just installing the updates. Hopefully we will get more info in the coming months.

Now that both 11.44 and summer is here. 😉
Do we have update to the ETA? 🙏

Hi @Anthony Hodges - there have been further changes to Microsoft’s EOL timeline and guidance. This is all a bit “dynamic” for lack of a better phrase. We have just updated the KB article and will update the advisory post above with the new dates and impacts / recommendations as those are clarified.

For the moment, the TLDR; as I understand it is that Microsoft is not able to make the necessary APIs available in all clouds by end June as previously planned, and they will continue to allow use of EWS for Kiosk / F3 licensed mailboxes through October 2026. Accordingly, our impacted SW customers will have until Oct. 2026 to move to 11.44. I’ll work on gathering further guidance around the release plans and recommended actions. Keep letting us know specific questions. We appreciate the patience!

Hi,

Thank you for this information.

Are there plans to backport the changes to the API usage to 11.40?

Some of our major upgrade approvals may take some time time. Being able to move to a new API within the same major release would save a lot of time.

Kind regards,

Paul

I second the request from Paul G.  Already had a big customer this week asking me about this.

They’re still on 11.36 and planning for 11.40 at this very moment.  Their policy is LTS - 1 …  and let other commvault customers hit new release issues first…

I tried arguing with them that 11.44 technically is 11.42 with a roll-up of all released features and fixes of the past year… but … nope.

Backporting seems like a reasonable request...

Hi @Anthony Hodges / others interested - got a little additional insight that the updates are built in to 11.44 but they are turned off by default for now in light of Microsoft pushing the first phase milestone out to October from June. We’re working on some additional KB guidance and documentation updates.

@renaatski @Paul G thank you for sharing the additional questions and feedback regarding planned upgrade cycles. This is a fairly major update and there are not currently plans to backport, but our team will continue assessing impacts and evolving plans as well as enablement.

Forum|alt.badge.img+2

Thanks @Jennifer Kelley, it would be good to know what Graph API permissions will required for those customers that don’t want to use the Express Configuration (FIC based) and instead use the Custom Configuration.

Hello,

are there any potential performance improvements triggered by this change?

Hi Lukas,

Good day.

Unfortunately, we have identified several limitations while evaluating the migration from Exchange Web Services (EWS) to Microsoft Graph.

I have been working with the CST team on this migration, and we encountered several functional gaps, particularly related to:

  • Full mailbox restore
  • Archive mailbox backup and restore

To clarify the current status, I engaged with the Microsoft Development team. Their response is as follows:

"Yes, we can confirm that the gaps between EWS and Graph are being addressed by the Graph product engineering teams. However, Microsoft cannot provide customer-specific access to non-public product roadmap information, including feature delivery timelines, prioritization decisions, or future implementation plans. Any updates will be communicated through Microsoft's official public documentation and announcements once they are ready for general release."

Based on the current limitations and Microsoft's response, my recommendation is not to migrate to Microsoft Graph at this time. Instead, I recommend continuing to use EWS until Microsoft closes the remaining feature gaps and officially announces support for the required functionality.

This approach will help avoid operational limitations, especially for full mailbox restore and archive mailbox scenarios.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss this further.

Thanks & Regards,

Ramadan

Hello to everyone tracking this transition. We have a new and much more in-depth KB article and we have also updated the summary advisory above. Stay tuned for more as we get closer to the September release milestones and to Microsoft’s October phase 1 milestone.
