Hello guys,

I want to get better at troubleshooting Linux clients, Oracle and PostgreSQL DBs. I know all of them from the administrative site from Commvault and can troubleshoot from there but I am completely lost when it gets deeper. For example I just learned about control files and spfiles from Oracle DBs. Both control file and spfile are needed for a successful restore of the DB, but as a pure Commvault admin I didnt know that.

What do you guys think what would be the best training to start with? I didnt find any DB trainings specially for backup admins but maybe you have something in mind.

Thanks in advance

Eddi

Hi Eddi,

There are quite a few YouTube tutorials available from third-party sources, so you can definitely do a deeper dive into the topic. Generally, the challenge with Linux is that there have been hundreds of distributions released over the years, so there isn't a single ultimate troubleshooting guide that covers everything. As far as I remember, the certification path courses (the self-paced training is free) also include a few Linux-related modules.

What I would recommend is deploying a small Red Hat or Oracle Linux VM and simply playing around with it. Install a few applications, maybe even PostgreSQL or Oracle (using a Commvault-supported version), get familiar with the CLI, learn the basics of navigation, and get comfortable with commands like tail for quick log analysis and troubleshooting. That would be the best option to learn both Linux and DBs. Later on you can add additional VM to this set and learn how to backup K8S (K3S) clusters too.

Here are some basic materials that could be helpful at start:
Troubleshooting Backup - Linux File System

Backup Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Backups - Oracle Agent

Troubleshooting Oracle Configurations

Hi @edso,

There are a few courses in Readiverse Academy that may be relevant and worth checking out:

I'm also looking into whether Readiverse Academy offers any dedicated courses focused specifically on Linux administration, Oracle internals, PostgreSQL architecture, or database troubleshooting from a backup administrator's perspective. If I find additional learning paths that align more closely with what you're looking for, I'll be happy to share them.

One question that may help narrow the recommendations: are you working primarily with Commvault Cloud SaaS workloads or traditional/on-prem Oracle and PostgreSQL environments? That will help determine whether the most relevant learning path is workload-focused, infrastructure-focused, or a combination of both.

Thank you,

Roy

Hey Roy,

thanks for your reply.

We have a lot of different customers with different workloads so I would say it is 50/50. But I am open to learn as much as I can.

Kind regards

Eddi
