Hi everyone,

I'm seeking clarification regarding the Auto Discovery features available in Commvault's Metallic environment.

Specifically:

  • What types of resources can be automatically discovered?
For instance, is it possible to configure auto discovery for specific services like Amazon RDS?

  • Can I configure global auto discovery across all resources in specific accounts?

  • Is it feasible to filter discovered resources using tags?

Hi Nadavv,

Just to clear any confusion, we don’t protect these PaaS instances via the Automatic Discovery protection method referenced in your post but can explicitly have these setup and configured for backup instead. I believe that it was Lukas is trying to communicate here.

Thank you for the detailed response!

Upon reviewing the provided information, it appears that the auto discovery features are primarily tailored for on-premises applications. I would like to confirm:

  • Is it possible to configure auto discovery for cloud-based databases such as Azure SQL Database or Amazon RDS within the Metallic environment?

  • If not currently available, are there plans to support auto discovery for these cloud services in the future?

Hi Nadvv,

We're not currently providing backups for PaaS databases, but backups for VMs and Storage Accounts can be provided best on the tags - so your setup should be covered. The auto-discovery feature shown in the image refers specifically to on-prem or VM-installed databases.

Please note that third-party backups serve more as an additional layer of protection to stay platform agnostic, rather than a primary backup method. For example, Azure’s native SQL backups run every 5 minutes and are geo-redundant by default.

Why not start a trial? Commvault Cloud is a feature-rich, stable, and truly enterprise-grade solution -see it for yourself.

What you means by “We're not currently providing backups for PaaS databases” ?  I’m pretty sure that you offer those backups, for example - https://docs.metallic.io/metallic/azure_sql_database.html

You're right - I'm not saying it's impossible. What I mean is that we're not currently using this feature, and we don't have the licenses to support it.

I’m really confused,
Assume I want to use Metallic to backup my Azure SQL databases, is it possible? do I have some limitations?

Of course it’s possible, you even linked related documentation (Azure Databases), but there are different licenses for different workloads, so not every customer is using everything. Here are some examples:

  • VM Backup
  • Files & Object Backup (including Storage Accounts)
  • Database backup (including PaaS DB)
  • M365
  • etc.

Here you can see the details - SaaS Pricing | Commvault
