Hi All,

I need some guidance on the best backup type to use for our domain controllers on azure vms. We are in the process of setting up a service account for the active directory granular recovery, however as for the VM it self what is the best Virtual machine backup type to use ?

The options within the VM group configuration are as follows;

Application Aware

Uses in guest application plug-ins to assist the Virtual Server Agent quiescing and providing granular application level recoverability.

File System and application consistent

Uses VM restore point to perform a point-in-time application consistent snapshot of all the managed disks of the VM.

Crash consistent

Uses Microsoft Azure software snapshot to allow a basic backup of the virtual machine.

Application-based backups

Performs application discovery and configures backups by installing an in-guest agent.

Hello @MTCV,

The answer depends on your requirements for recovery of the VM/VM Files and/or AD application.

What level of recovery do you need? - Do you need VM level / OS Disk level or deeper, i.e. System State & Application (AD) Level?

How often do you need to run a VM backup vs AD Backup to meet your objectives?

My initial suggestion here would be to leverage either of the “Application Based” or Application Aware” options here.

This will give you both a VM level Backup and an Application level backup for AD from within the VM. - Therefore you have granularity of being able to restore VM / VM Files / AD Objects, etc.

Hope this helps, let us know if you have any queries on this.

Best Regards,

Michael
