Ability to backup encrypted partitions on a virtual machine

Hello Commvault Community,

I come to you today for asking if it is possible to protect a virtual machine with VSA, where there are both encrypted and non-encrypted partitions.

In the case of non-encrypted partitions, there is no problem, it is correctly recognized and protected by the data protection task. However, in the case of encrypted partitions, there is no information about them in the logs, as if he did not see them. (screen01.png)

Is this expected behavior, or could there be a problem on our side somewhere?

Thanks&Regards,
Kamil

Hi @Kamil,

We backup the entire disk as raw blocks - what is on them does not matter for full backup and restore. Generally the only issue with encrypted partitions is on restore we may not be able to read the file (as its encrypted) - and the best option may be to restore the disk and attach it to the VM to copy the files out.

Hello @Damian Andre

Here we have a situation that there is Nutanix AHV, so we only have Full virtual machine recovery and Guest File and Folders.

What if we installed iDA File System on this virtual machine? Logically, he still won't be able to get to the encrypted partition, but maybe there is a different logic and different configuration there?

Let me know if there is any sensible way out of this situation?

Thanks,
Kamil

Hello Commvault Community,

Does anyone have an idea how to protect such an encrypted resource so that individual files can be recovered later when restored? Is something like this possible in Commvault systems?

The FS agent does not bring the expected effect

Thanks,
Kamil
