Hi everyone,
after upgrading a customer environment from Commvault 11.32 to 11.40 (LTS), we ran into an issue with the SharePoint Online Classic agent.
Environment & situation:

  • Commvault upgraded from 11.32 → 11.40
The customer is still using the SharePoint Online (Classic) agent, configured via the Java / CommCell Console
  • SharePoint Online is not yet configured in Command Center

After the upgrade, the Classic agent can no longer be used for new protection jobs, so we are planning to configure SharePoint Online in Command Center going forward.

Before doing so, I would like to clarify the impact on existing (legacy) SharePoint Online backups created with the Classic agent:

Are those legacy backups still restorable as is using the Classic client / Java Console after new protection is moved to Command Center?
Or is there any migration or conversion step required to make the legacy data restorable or visible in Command Center?

thanks and best regards,

Andreas

Hey Andreas!

Thanks for reaching out here! Glad the decision has been made to move to the current SharePoint Online agent. Since the SharePoint Classic agent is deprecated, Microsoft could shut off the APIs being used at any time which would stop all functionality!

Are those legacy backups still restorable as is using the Classic client / Java Console after new protection is moved to Command Center?

Yes the new agent would not impact the old one. My bigger concern would be lack of support on the Microsoft side which is something Commvault can not control.

Or is there any migration or conversion step required to make the legacy data restorable or visible in Command Center?

Unfortunately, no. The new agent was a complete redesign so migrating the data is not possible. How long is retention configured for the old agent? The sooner the conversion to the new agent the better as you can start any new needed recoveries from the new agent once you get your baseline, and let the old data start aging out naturally.

Hi @ak2

Good day!

Regarding moving from SharePoint Classic agent to SharePoint V2 agent below are references

Existing SharePoint Online (Classic) clients remain visible and accessible in the Java-based CommCell Console

You can restore data from legacy backups using the Classic agent and CommCell Console, as long as the client exists and is not deleted.

There is no supported migration from Classic agent to SharePoint Version 2 Agent

Disable the backup Activity, Data in older agent will remain as is and gets aged as per retention

Create new SharePoint V2 Agent in command center and start protecting the data from new Client.
