We are currently using Commvault v10 with Dell ML3 tape libraries. Initially, we encountered a media mount error on the library. After replacing the drives, we began receiving the following error intermittently on a few of the tape libraries. Once the drives were cleaned, backups resumed successfully.

However, with one particular tape library, the issue persists even after replacing the drives.

Note: During backup, the job runs for a few GB and failing with an error.

  Error Code: [40:73]
Description: Error occurred     in Library [Vxxxx], Drive Name [IBM ULT3580-HH7_2], Barcode [S77370L7],     Path [\\.\Tape1] [Drive did not respond to commands properly. There may be     too many drives on the SCSI Bus operating at the same time. Try reducing     the number of drives on the SCSI Bus. Try reducing the synchronous     transfer rate on the SCSI Controller. Or two controlling programs may be     accessing the library concurrently. For more details, please check to see     a corresponding Operating System event for this device.]. For more help,    please call your vendor's support hotline.

hello @Thava
good day,

After replacing the drives have you had a chance to run the Drive Diagnostics test ?
This can help us identify any remaining issues.

Please follow the steps in this Dell article to run the test:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000144463/how-to-run-drive-diagnostics-test-on-ml3-library

Once done kindly share the test status so we can continue troubleshooting the issue from the Commvault side.

We requested onsite team to perform the Tests on both tapes drives and the results: passed.

Hi @Thava

That's good to hear glad the tape drive tests passed

In this case, I recommend running an additional test using the SCSICmd Tool on the MediaAgent. You can find the documentation here:
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.42/commcell-console/scsicmd_tool.html

I suggest starting with the following commands:

  • Test Unit Ready
  • Load and Unload

Then, proceed with the Read and Write tests.

Hope this helps!
