Hi,

Is there any document (or KB) how to configure network at OS lever for Windows CommServe/Media agent with multiple NICs? Do we configure default gateway for every network interface configured  or there should be only one interface with default gateway and static routes?

Thanks,

Radek

The below documents and their subpages can help:
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/dedicated_backup_network.html

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/dedicated_backup_network.html

In a nutshell, you specify which interfaces to use at either end.

For the most part we can adapt to what you need in your environment. Port\direction restrictions, network gateways, different methods of sending \ receiving data, NICs to create specific backups networks, etc.

The static ports for CommVault are 8400 and 8403 but the dynamic ports used for operations are 49152 through 65535.

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/tcp_ports_used_for_services.html#dynamic-ports

If you want to reduce or port utilization or set traffic in a specific direction, you will need to configure network routes or topology.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses but my question is just about the routing. If there are 3 interfaces in Windows Server (CommServe/MediaAgent) each one with different backup purpose, how do you configure network? Does every nic have default gateway, or only one nic has default gateway and the traffic is controlled using static routes? I think the answer is default gateways for all, but cannot find any confirmation if this is the best practise.

Regards,

Radek

Whatever you have set in the hostname field of commserve\client\media agent properties is what CommVault is going to attempt to resolve and use for communication.

You can used ‘DIPs’ to override these hostname properties Configuring a Dedicated Backup Network Using Data Interface Pairs (commvault.com)

Typically, you would only set the default gateway on a single NIC.

Whether or not you’ll need static routes on your second and third NICs is entirely dependent on your environment. Those questions would be better posed to your network team.
