How can we backup CIFS shares directly from a storage appliace using Commvault . We use Hyperscales appliances as Mediaagents for all of our storage policies. Until now we were using NDMP backups for these shares but now are moving away from Netapp.

Hello @Kay5

Please refer to below documentation and let me know if you any queries

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/92615_getting_started_with_network_share_for_cifs_shares.html

Note:

  • Commvault recommends the use of MediaAgents as data access nodes. If you do not plan to use MediaAgents as data access nodes, then the hardware requirements of the data access nodes are same as that required for regular file system clients.

  • You can add additional data access nodes based on the bandwidth load between the data access nodes (source) and the MediaAgents (destination).

Thanks Theja. I did go through the above KB article. According to this I will need to create Windows OS access nodes additionally. Since our environment is VMware and the CIFS data is under 50TB, will 2 VMs suffice and do these need to be clustered? If you could give additional steps it would be great.

We don’t have SAN connectivity in the environment so using the default NBD mode.

Hello @Kay5

You can split the 50 TB into 2 CIFS shares and mount the shares to the Windows machine.

You can check the Hardware requirement for access node below.

Thankyou Theja.. I will come back if any issue crops up.
