Hi, we have to move our current commvault (live sync) env to another domain and new ipaddresses.

We have 2 locations with each 3 backup servers and each 1 commcell console.

What is the best way to do this?

  • remove all the backup and comcell servers from AD, change ipaddresse and add them to the new domain?
  • How about the license, this is connected to the ipaddresse?
  • Do I have to change some settings in the comcell console like name management?
  • any other things to think about……..

Hi @Carol George ,

PFB details with regards CommCell migration from old domain to new Domain. Adding to below points we don't need a new license file for migrating the CS from existing domain to new one.

Name change tool within CommServe will perform the Domain change process.

To change the domain of a CommServe in Commvault, you should use the Name Management tool on the Command Center or Java Console. The process involves updating the CommServe hostname and ensuring all clients and Media Agents are aware of the new domain. Here are the key steps and considerations:

Steps for CommServe Domain Change

  • Preparation

    • Perform a Disaster Recovery (DR) backup and ensure it completes successfully.
    • Update the hosts file on the CommServe to include the current CommServe name and IP address.
    • Ensure all Media Agents and servers are accessible during the name change.
    • Review firewall/network considerations if applicable.
  • Update the CommServe Hostname

    • In the Command Center, navigate to Manage > CommCell or Manage > System > Name Management.
    • Use the Change CommServe Hostname option to enter the new domain-qualified hostname and save the changes.
    • The Commvault software will update the CommServe hostname and notify all MediaAgents and servers. If any are offline, the update will complete when they become available.

Hi, thnx, but what about the fact that we also going to change the ipaddresses of the commcell and the backup servers? Do we have first to change the ipadresses before running that tool.

Don’t we have to change the domain manually on the comceel an backupservers in the system properties of the servers?

Hi @Carol George ,

CommServe communication is handled via Hostname. Hence IP change will not have an impact unless if any clients are registered using the IP.

Ensure to keep the console open while you update the system properties and then proceed to change it from the Java console using name change tool.

Hi, you are talking about Change CommServe Hostname but the hostname won’t change of the comcell console (and live sync) and backups servers, only the ipaddresses and put in a new domain will be done.
