CommServe and Media agent Hardware refresh

Forum|alt.badge.img+2

We are going to refresh the CommServe and MA hardware with below procedure.

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/commserve_hardware_refresh_overview.html
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/mediaagent_hardware_refresh_overview.html

We have 2 physical servers.

  1. CommServe with media agent and local disk library size is almost 20 TB
  2. Media Agent and local disk library is almost 20 TB

Firstly, we tried to migrate CommServe with local DL. After restore the DR backup on new hardware, we tried to copy all contents from old CommServe DL to new CommServe. But data copy to new server is in progress and very larger capacity than source (Source capacity is 20 TB out of 21 TB, Destination capacity is 25 TB and going to 100% over).
How can we move old CS library data to new CS?

Secondly, Do we need to migrate/hardware refresh the MA first then CommServe?

Thirdly, Can we do bare metal image level backup and restore for both CommServe and MA?

Hi @Ibrahim Khalil ,

First, we would like to understand how you are copying the disk library data from the old server to the new server. Are you using the "Robocopy"?

The best approach here is firstly separate the MediaAganet component from Commserver and you can follow the below steps,

1) Use the "move mount path" feature, and move the data from the Disk library attached with the Commserver to the new MAhttps://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/moving_mount_path.html

2) Use the "move DDB" feature and move the Deduplication database from Commserver to the new MA.https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/moving_deduplication_database_to_another_location.html

3) Then use the below document for the "CommServe Hardware Refresh"

@Ibrahim Khalil

You can try following the below steps. These steps are just the sequence. For more details you can follow the doc links already shared.

1.-You need to Install new MA on new hardware and register to the old actual Commserver
2.- Proceed with moving from old Media Agent (on CS) to new Media Agent (Media Agent Migration) using replace MediaAgent app.
3.- Once the MA has been completely migrated, then proceed with CS migration to the same machine. (E.g.  DR backup on old CS and move it on new hardware)
4.- Shut down services and power off the old Commserver
5.- Change IP addres/name on the new Hardware by the old Commserver
6.- Install Commserver and restore DR Backup on new Hardware.
7.- Verify if all entities are working fine.
