Commserve Livesync licensing

Hi,

Commvault docs say that for Commserve DR I will require two Microsoft SQL Server agent licenses:

“You must have two Microsoft SQL Server agent licenses, one for the production CommServe host and the other for the standby CommServe host.”

But then the Licensing guide says the following:

“Server data that is protected purely for the operation of the Commvault solution (CommServe® database, deduplication databases, CommServe LiveSync, etc.) will not consume instance-based, or capacity-based licensing. “

Let’s say I run Commserve in ESXi host that is fully licensed for Commvault Per-Socket and want to use a standby Commserve in a physical device that does not have any Commvault license.

I assume only “restores” will take place to the standby Commserve, and the SQL Agent license for the active Commserve will come from the license that covers the sockets for the hypervisor host. Also, data is purely for the operation of the CommServe Livesyc.

So, from what I can see there is nothing I need to buy extra even though the documents seem to imply otherwise.

Can someone clarify?

Thanks

Hi @rduarte ,

For CommServe LiveSync in a disaster recovery setup, you do need two Microsoft SQL Server agent licenses—one for the production CommServe host and another for the standby CommServe host.

However, the licensing guide clarifies that server data used purely for the operation of Commvault solutions, such as CommServe LiveSync, does not consume instance-based or capacity-based licensing. Therefore, while the SQL Server agent licenses are required, they do not incur additional licensing costs for the operation of CommServe LiveSync itself.

If your ESXi host is fully licensed for Commvault Per-Socket, and the standby CommServe is only used for restores, you should not need to purchase additional licenses beyond the SQL Server agent licenses. This setup is covered under your existing Commvault licensing agreement.
