Hi everyone,

Our CommServe is a VMware VM with 32 GB RAM, but lately memory utilization is consistently around 90% as the environment grows. We have multiple VMware, Azure, AWS, OCI, LiveSync and Microsoft 365 environments, although the total number of VMs is not particularly high.

SQL Server Maximum Server Memory is already configured at ~16 GB, so SQL is not consuming all available memory.

Would it be necessary to increase the CommServe all the way to 64 GB RAM, or would a lower intermediate value be sufficient to provide additional headroom?

Since it is a VMware VM, we can increase RAM independently without necessarily increasing vCPU. CPU utilization is currently not a concern.

What would you consider the best approach in this situation?

Best regards,
Nikos

Hey @Nikos.Kyrm

Each CommCell role has it’s own sizing guidelines, if you’re using the same machine for multiple roles, then add the required resources for each role,

CS : Hardware Specifications for the CommServe Server

VSA: Hardware Specifications for the CommServe Server

MA: Hardware Specifications for Deduplication Mode

It’s generally recommended to separate the roles on diferent machine, especially for large environments.

Thanks,

Abdu

Hi @AbdulRahman AlSindiony

Thanks for your reply.

Our CommServe has only the CommServe / Management Server role. The other roles mentioned (MA, VSA, etc.) are distributed across their respective servers. I only mentioned the multiple Azure, AWS, OCI and M365 environments to highlight that the overall environment is becoming more complex.

So, coming back to the main question: with the CommServe currently at 32 GB RAM and consistently around 90% utilization, is the recommendation to go directly to 64 GB, or is there a recommended intermediate RAM size between 32 GB and 64 GB?

Thanks!
Nikos

@Nikos.Kyrm , there is no limitation from Commvault on the step size, 64/128 GB is not mandatory, you can even increase in sub GB step,

If you’re going to increase it, I’d say 48 GBs, but it’s worthy to keep an eye on the RAM utilization, specially when onboarding a big number of new clients/VMs
