Commvault Backed up data migration from on-premises to Cloud

Hi Team,

We have a requirement where a company is separating from its parent organization and establishing a newly created Commvault environment.

As part of this transition, they would like to migrate their long-term retention backup data from the existing on-premises environment to the cloud within the new Commvault setup.

Please confirm whether this migration is supported and advise on the recommended approach to perform it.

Additionally, please provide the following details:

  • Prerequisites and requirements

  • Supported migration methods

  • High-level implementation steps

  • Any limitations or considerations that should be taken into account

Your guidance on this would be appreciated.

    CommCell Migration Overview

    CommCell Migration (CCM) is the process by which Clients, Media Agents, Storage, Jobs, etc. can be migrated from one CommCell to another.  It does require the Java UI.

      Scott has the answer, just pay particular attention to those docs. This is very common and we see it all the time, but there are limitations with CCM -- just make sure you read the migration considerations page so you are not surprised by anything - i.e  After CommCell Migration, the Deduplication Database is sealed and operates in the read-only mode in the destination CommCell. Migrated Storage Policies in the destination CommCell cannot be used to deduplicate new backup operations.

       

      So you’ll need new storage policies / plans for new backup data etc.

        ​@Damian Andre : we only require long retention data for restore purpose. We will create everything from the scratch. All the on-premises servers will be migrated to Cloud and then we will add them to the new CommCell and backup them. Old data will only be required for recovery purpose.
