CommVault feature like Veeam

After reading some of their documentation it seems Disaster Recovery Plan, with “plan” apparently being literal in the sense that you have to come up with your own documentation “plan” for recovering from a disaster.

While Commvault has no direct equivalent, we do have documentation on how to recover from various disaster scenarios. Every real-life situation and scope of the disaster will have its own requirements, there are some general recovery operations for recovering the CommServe and its database as well as MediaAgents so restores can be started for affected clients. Depending on the type of client and the agent being backed up, the recovery process will be different, but the method will be the same, meaning that you would recover from the most recent full backup.

You can refer to the below documentation on CommServe failover, recovering the CommServe from a Disaster Recovery Backup, and recovering the MediaAgents.

If you have any questions about a specific scenario, let me know and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.

@Pascal K We use the App Validation

Have done for years - 

Its a great feature - and we use it for Audits and have the reports auto generate and stored away.

This was something done manually ‘many years ago’ - but now sits there and just runs

As always - CommVaults infinitely powerful - and we used some PowerSHell to enhance the function, by ‘randomly selecting’ a 2 VM’s from a List of 60 VM’s and validating those ‘2 VM’s

And we keep this rolling every day of the year - so over 12 months we have a full sample of our main VM’s ‘powering on’

Is there any update regarding a “Sure Backup”-like feature in Commvault?
I’m not interested in DIY workarounds (such as scripts), but rather in a solid, built-in feature!

I do miss a simple user friendly option that allows a customer to perform an easy recovery validation of any kind of client to be performed to /dev/null or a temporary location on the target client. 

​@Rajesh Polimera please do not come back with Commcell console options. We use Command Center and our customers cannot access the legacy console. Besides a manual option to perform a validation I also would like to have an option that allows customers to implement a randomized schedule that targets a set of client for recovery validation. The collected data should be used for realistic RTO measurement and monitoring and can be used additionally to advise the customer where the bottleneck is located.

Not sure if it’s similar to Veeam Sure Backup or it is part of Commvault Auto Recovery. 

From it’s Data Sheet, I see that “Recovery automation”, supports following Features and Benefits:
• Replication of VMs both on-premises and in the cloud
• Replication of databases and applications
• Replication of files and volumes
• Group-level consistency replication on-premises and in the cloud

Any feedback about that?

For me, is still not clear if  Autonomous Recovery is similar to Veeam Sure Backup.

For a long time waiting a functionality from Commvault for a automated / schedule restore operations, that boots VM backups in an isolated virtual lab, runs heartbeat, ping, script-based, etc. Then, proceed with additional (optional) malware tests to confirm recoverability and finally generates report for all these operations!

Clear! Well I can't tell you because I'm lacing experience with both solutions. We currently do not use Commvault auto recovery and I have never used VEEAM before. I hope someone else can share experiences.
