Hi Vaulters,

I have 1200+ filesystem servers where daily filesystem backup is scheduled.
Is there a ways to delete the files from the client machine automatically once the backup is completed (Only successful files).?

I am trying new ways in automation and am stuck here. Can you guys help me out?

Regards,

Murtaza

You could look at implementing File Archiving, which provides an option to Delete Files After Archiving.

Hi @Murtaza

To automate file deletion on the client after a successful backup in Commvault, you can use a post-backup script on a backupset/subclient of a client via the CommCell Console.

The script can Check backup status and Delete only the files that were successfully backed up

Open CommCell Console -> Go to: Client > File System > Backup Set > Subclient > Properties -> Under the Pre/Post  Process tab, add your script under Post Process

Save and test by running a backup job

Ensure your script includes logic to delete only when the backup is successful ->  Pre-processes and Post-processes - Online Help

Dheeraj

@Murtaza

Archive Backup and File System Backup are different in their purpose and functionality:

  • Archive Backup: This type of backup is designed for long-term data retention and compliance purposes. It typically involves moving data that is not frequently accessed to a storage location where it can be retained for extended periods. Archive backups are often used to reduce the amount of data stored on primary storage systems and to meet regulatory requirements.

  • File System Backup: This is a more traditional backup method that involves creating copies of files and directories on a regular basis to protect against data loss. File System Backups are used to ensure that data can be restored in the event of accidental deletion, corruption, or disaster.

You can perform archiving on linux servers as well: UNIX and Mac File Systems Archiving
