Confirmed for you, straight from dev:
Track location by IP address via whatever adapter can reach the internet
If you are using a VPN, we would potentially assume the laptop is wherever the VPN lives (though it depends on how much the VPN does, for example a VPN might only act when a name can’t be resolved, but not for EVERYTHING).
