We have CommServe version 11.24. on Windows sever 2012 R2 Standard, and we are planning to update the OS to Windows 2016 as well the commserve version 11.28. once it is completed, we need to update media servers OS version to Windows 2016.

The commserve server is not act as media server and no disk/tape libraries are configured. All(DDB/DISK/TAPE) are configured on media servers.

Can i follow the below stpes.

  1. take DR backup
  2. Uninstall the commvault software on the commserver
  3. upgrade the os from Win 2012 to Win 2016
  4. Install the Commvault software and during the installation can i choose the existing DR backup.

Kindly suggest how to proceed it.

Hi @Thava_91 ,

You can check our Documentation:

I have checked the documents already, but still confusing which one to follow it.

I am going to use the same commserve server which is VM machine.

Can I update the CommVault version 11.28 on windows 2012 STD r2 from 11.24. Post that can I go for the OS upgrade. Is it will work ?

@Thava_91

In that case, I would recommend to use a new VM. Same as recommended here:

Hello @Thava_91 , just to add on - If you are not changing the infrastructure, like the commserve server will remain the same and you stay on the same machine, you can first take the DR backup, copy the DR  backup files if present locally on commserve to another machine and if the commserve is a VM, take a snapshot of it as well.

Once the backup part is done, you can upgrade the OS first, make sure Commvault is up and running fine, take another DR backup and snapshot, then upgrade the Commvault version to 11.28, as 11.28 is not compatible with Windows 2012.
https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/2801_commserve_server_system_requirements_windows.html

Please also make sure to copy the DR  backup files if present locally on commserve to another machine as a safety.

Best,

Just a small add to this, 11.28 will run on Windows 2012/R2 but it has been removed from the docs to discourage users from doing so, as we are deprecating Windows 2012 and 2012 R2 for CS/Webserver in December with the 2024 release, including blocking upgrades. If 11.28 run on windows 2012 r2, then first i will upgrade the commserve from 11.24 to 11.28 and then i can take DR backup and snapshot and proceed the OS upgrade right ??

@Thava_91 On 11.24, you can first take the DR backup, copy the DR  backup files if present locally on Commserve to another machine and if the Commserve is a VM, take a snapshot of it as well.

Once the above backup part is done, you can upgrade the OS first, make sure Commvault is up and running fine, take another DR backup and snapshot, then upgrade the Commvault version to 11.28.

As Damian mentioned above “11.28 will run on Windows 2012/R2 but it has been removed from the docs to discourage users from doing so, as we are deprecating Windows 2012 and 2012 R2 for CS/Webserver in December with the 2024 release, including blocking upgrades”

Let me know if you have any further queries.

Thanks for your inputs..

Once the mentioned backup part is done, I need to Uninstall/clean the Commvault software or Is it possible directly upgrade OS.

Hello @Thava_91 , there should not be any need to uninstall/clean Commvault, you can directly upgrade the OS, hence the main reason for us to take backup and snapshot of the server at first.

Hi @Rajiv , I have checked with windows team, They can do the direct upgrade from win 2012 r2 to 2016 only and not possible to upgrade directly to Win 2022 version.

So, planning to go new VM with Win 2022 OS.

Should i follow the same process right.

  1. Install the OS on the new VM.
  2. set the same IP and host name as exisitng commserv
  3. Remove the new server from network.
  4. take a clone existing commserver and snapshot backup.
  5. Take DR backup
  6. Copy the DR backup to new VM.
  7. Install the same commvault version as exisitng commserv.
  8. During the installtion submit the commvault DR dump.
  9. once installtion is completed.
  10. test the backup
  11. all are ok, then i can take DR/snap backups and proceed to upgrade the commvault version to 11.28.

Please confirm me, if the steps are ok.

Hi @Thava_91 , I have shared you the steps when you were upgrading OS to 2016. Since its a new requirement, new VM will be introduced, please stick to our article: https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/4739_commserve_hardware_refresh_overview.html
