Question

Is there a way to control when the synthetic full in a server plan runs?

Hello,

I am still tryin to get used to server plans. Consider the following requirements:

  • weekly full backups on Fridays
  • incrementals on the other days of the week

If I create a server plan, with a 1 week retention, I understand it will run a synth full every 7 days. but when? will it be on Friday? Can I control this via backup window?

If I do not have a full backup windows defined in the plan, synth fulls are controlled by the backup window as the incrementals?

Regards,

Pedro

@PedroRocha

To ensure that synthetic full runs on preferred day of week, you can use Blackout Window for Synthetic full operation at Global System, Company or Server group levels.

So, you would suggest me to change the automatically created synth full schedule from automatic to manual and indicate it to run weekly?

So, if there's an automatic synth full schedule to run every seven days, I would create a blackout window excluding sat-thu, so it would run on friday?

Hello,

I was wondering if you managed to solve this and how? Our customer wants to use only the Command Center and we cannot find a way of configuring manual synthetic fulls in order to avoid an automatic full running only when the retention expires…

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sergio

I have the same situation, no way to set syn full schedule in the command center. It has to be automatic and then you have to select the black out window. In 11.36 there is supposed to be a setting to allow you to select syn fulls to automatically run monthly/yearly.. For now, you have to use the commcell console to manually schedule your syn fulls on the days you want them.

It makes no sense why Commvault woudn’t just include syn fulls in plans so we can configure it per our company/customer standards. Especially if they are trying to get everyone to use the command center and move away from the commcell console. Infuriating to say the least.

Hi,

Did anyone find a way to manage SynthFull schedules in the command center?

A synth full schedule created with the Java console will not appear in the Commad center and I don’t like the default behaviour where SynthFUll schedules run in the middle of the week. Changing the schedule in the Java console will do the job for a few days until the schedule gets back to its original setting.

Using a blackout window will let the job in pending state in the job controller which is not suitable einther.

Just to clarify a few things on synthetic fulls in server plans.

The synth full is triggered automatically based on the retention you've applied. In the plan, you only define the number of days, but if you look at it from the Java console, it picks 1 cycle by default. That’s why you see a synthetic full running even if you didn’t schedule it—this is by design, to make sure old jobs don’t pile up.

Now about blackout windows—there's been some confusion that jobs might go into a pending state if you use them, but that’s not true. You can check the doc here:
Excerpt: If you’ve got blackout windows at both system and server group levels, both apply. So for example, if the system is blacked out on Thursdays and the group on Sundays, jobs won’t run on either day. They won’t sit in pending—they just won’t get triggered.

Personally, I’d say let the synth full run—it does what it’s supposed to. But if you want to control when it runs, use a blackout window to shape the schedule.

I’ll also check internally if manual control over this from the Command Center is something on the roadmap, and update here once I know more.

Okay, I think i got something :
https://documentation.commvault.com/additionalsetting/showsynthfullschedulesinserverplan.html

Add the additional setting at the Commserve and it will work.

I just tried and i can see an option to modify the schedule, there you go :)
