License Server and Primary Commserve in MultiCommcell Environment

Hi,

 

I want to setup a License Server

and Primary Commserve

in new customer environment. I would like to have both on one Commserve machine but I am not sure if these 2 roles can be shared on one Commserve Computer.

Do I need to create separate Commserve as license server and another one for Primary Commcell or is it a supported configuration to have both on one Commserve?

Hi Robert,

 

A License Server will be used in multi-commcell environments to ease the Licensing administration. Instead of applying individual licenses to each Cell, with a License Sever the administrator just needs to apply the license to the License Server, and child Cells linked to it will simply take the license from it.

 

If I understood it correctly, you are trying to implement a License Server on a new environment with just a single Cell, is that correct?

If that is the case, you will still need 2 Cells. The Parent/Licensing Cell (providing the licensing), and your Backup/Child Cell (to run the backup operations)

it will be feasible, but will also be overcomplicating things, since you will not get any benefits from the License Server when there is only 1 Cell to manage.

Thanks for the reply.

There are gonna be 2 cells on day one and possibly more in the future.

Each Cell will have 2 Commserve Servers with LiveSync in-place.

To simplify license management I want to implement License Server and to simplify management of those Cells I want to configure Primary Commserve as a single point of management

What I am not sure about this configuration is whether can I have License Server role on Primary Commserve computer or do I need separate machines for that?

I haven’t tested it myself, but that should be feasible as long as you are not planning on using the License Server as a Tiered Metrics Report Server too, which according to documentation is not supported;

I am not sure if I fully comprehend Mixed Environments as I have never done this earlier, but as far as I understand License Server will act only as local Metrics Reporting Server right on top of service Commserves reporting directly to it. As mentioned before it will also be a Primary Commserve for those 2 cells. I don’t plan any additional tiers here.

I will let you know if everything works as expected once I configure it.
