Media agent accidentally upgraded by major release, Commserve running on older version, Aux Copy broken on MA

Hi folks-

One of our media agents was upgraded in error by a colleague to 11.24.56, while our Commserve and every other MA in the org is running 11.20.50. This misstep broke Aux Copies for the media agent that was upgraded.

I opened a case with Commvault some time ago, and the engineer assigned told me the only solution was to upgrade the Commserve to 11.24.56. That’s just not possible for us presently for a number of reasons.

My question is has anyone ever rolled back a major release update successfully on an MA? Or do you otherwise have a solution to what we find ourselves in here? I tend to believe the CV engineer and concede we’re stuck, but considering this particular MA is backing up only AD data in a very small domain, if there is a way, this might be the time to consider it. The risk is minimal.

Thanks

Hi Kristian,

Roll back is not an option for the affected MA has it is done during the initial phase of the upgrade.
Looking at the current scenario  if all other machine is still on sp20 you may proceed to uninstall CV package manually from MA server and reinstall SP20 version.

Yes uninstalling the Media Agent (take note of installed package) and re-install with FR20 media should work.

Hi @Kristian ,

These versions are 2-3 years old now.

Also, from what I can see 20.50 has been removed:

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/files/service_pack/updates/11_20_188.htm

I would recommend you upgrade soon.

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/planning_platform_release_installations_01.html

To keep your CommCell environment up to date, we recommend the following:

  • Update the platform release every 1 to 2 years.

  • Update the maintenance release every 2 to 3 months.

Best Regards,

Sebastien

Agreed, Sebastien.

One piece I left out was that we’ve transitioned to a different data protection solution for 98+% of our organization, but the powers that be have elected to retain the existing CV infrastructure in place since we need to be able to restore data up to 7 years back from tape. That said, they’re also unwilling to let us spend much time on anything other than the bare minimum to keep things running on the CV side. This is why we’re on such an old version.

I’ll need to get a change control passed by our change board before I can do anything here, but I’ll make sure to update the thread once I make a run at uninstalling and reinstalling.

Thanks, everyone.
