Hello everyone ,

We are currently exploring options for implementing a Disaster Recovery (DR) setup between two sites within our organization. Our main site operates on Nutanix AHV, while our designated DR site runs on VMware. Given the difference in virtualization platforms, we would like to inquire about the feasibility of establishing a robust link between the two environments to support seamless data replication and failover capabilities.

Specifically, we would like to understand:

  1. The compatibility and integration options between Nutanix AHV and VMware for DR purposes.
  2. Recommended tools or technologies to facilitate data replication and synchronization between the two platforms.
  3. Any prerequisites or considerations we should be aware of when configuring such a setup.
  4. Support for testing and simulating failover to ensure reliability.

Our aim is to ensure minimal downtime and data loss in the event of an outage.

Alright, so. Commvault supports conversion from AHV machines to VMware, as denoted by this matrix:

https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/essential/cross_hypervisor_restores_virtual_machine_conversion.html

However, the replication matrix is ambiguous as the AHV to VMware is blank. Uh, super unhelpful .. I’ve submitted a documentation request to fix that. I’ll try figure this out tomorrow.

Lets assume for replication it supported for AHV to VMware - that is obviously your best option. Auto recovery (product name) can replicate directly to the destination from VM to VM, or depending on your RPO requirement, it can keep the remote VM up to date based on storage replication, which has the advantage of deduplication aware replication rather than just compression over the wire.

Auto recovery supports test failovers, production failovers and failback etc. There is a video here that goes over some of the features.

I dont see any caveats from AHV to VMware conversions. The reverse has some listed here.

Hope that helps get you started

Hello @Damian Andre ,

Thank you for your clarification. I’ll proceed with testing using the auto-recovery option.

Thanks again!
