Hi Team,

I’m starting some preliminary research into an eventual OCI migration.

Can someone please point me in the right direction so I can research this.

I need to try and understand :-

1 - How do we hook into the OCI databases?

2 - Are there different variations on OCI backups?

For example, I see a section on the VSA agent and how to configure that, as seen here:-

https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/essential/121700_guided_setup_for_oracle_cloud_infrastructure.html

But are there other methods of backup?

I am still in the process of gathering more information on the OCI config side of things, but I am keen to see what we can do from a Commvault perspective.

Thanks in advance …..

To clarify:-

We will be using OCI Object Storage for backup targets.

I’m more interested in the discovery of the OCI DB’s, and how we hook everything into Commvault.

Drawbacks, limitations?  etc etc

Hello @MountainGoat

We hook into the OCI using a proxy server and credentials (TenantID, Fingerprint, and Private Keys).

Adding OCI Hypervisor Credentials to Credential Manager - https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/essential/153409_adding_oci_hypervisor_credentials_to_credential_manager.html

Adding an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Hypervisor - https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/essential/98777_adding_oracle_cloud_infrastructure_hypervisor.html

Thank you,
Collin

Thanks Colin.

Did you also use OCI Object Storage for your target library?

Any catches to be aware of?

Got a couple more questions if any one is out there?

So System Requirements, and specifically the Proxy.

When it talks about “ The VSA proxy must be an instance running in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “, are we simply talking about a VM which resides within OCI. Maybe similar to hot-add if I remember correctly.

I just want to make sure that there is no additional dedicated hardware required to setup OCI. In other words, OCI can spawn us a VM, and we then use that as our Proxy:-

https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/essential/98775_oracle_cloud_infrastructure_system_requirements.html

Feedback appreciated …. thanks 👍

Hello @MountainGoat

Yes, the VSA proxy must be a VM running in OCI. The requirements are based on how you will use the OCI, as outlined in the documentation.

Examples: Supported OS versions, OS requirements for FREL, whether you are backing up Storage Pool Disks or not.

Thank you,
Collin

Thanks Team,

Just an FYI, but I’m also advised that OCI Object storage does not dedupe natively (eg - through an OCI configuration rather than Commvault).

Worth keeping an eye on that if you are expecting 1-to-1 storage ratio’s to be maintained from an on-prem migration exercise.
