Does anyone know if it is possible to protect ONTAP S3 with Commvault?

Only these solutions are supported in the official documentation:

  • Cloudian S3-Compatible Object Storage

  • Huawei OceanStor Pacific (formerly called "OceanStor 100D" and "FusionStorage")

  • MinIO

  • Red Hat Ceph Storage 3 S3 endpoints (SSL with hosted domain)

  • StorageGRID object storage (S3 compatible)

  • Pure Storage FlashBlade

Would it be possible to protect ONTAP S3 in some other way with Commvault? Is it supported in future releases?

Hi @R Anwar

Thanks for your answer.

What I see in the link is associated with ONTAP S3 as cloud library. But what we need to know is if ONTAP S3 is supported as data to be protected from Commvault.

Regards.

@jfrejo Were you able to find a way?   I am looking to do the same thing.  Backing up Netapp/S3 objects into Commvault.

Yes, this is possible and supported. It is not documented per vendor, as by now most storage vendors offer storage solutions who offer S3-compatiblity. The maturity level of ONTAP S3 is limited to the basics, so you should not encounter any problems. If you do encounter an issue then you will have to open a ticket at NetApp.

I'm facing the same challenge right now and I'm glad to hear that it's working. An official mention in the documentation would be desirable.

The problem is that Commvault is not able to pull this off and it should come from individual suppliers. In this case the S3 "standard” removes this need, because to be able to protect data residing in S3 buckets Commvault just needs to be able to pull the data or metadata. To summarize: you can expect it to work out-of-the-box for every solutions that supports the S3 standard. And if you run into problems the first door to knock on is the one of the storage supplier.

Onno,
I agree with Pascal,  I think the documentation needs to be updated.  Maybe it does not need to list every S3 compliant device, but it should be updated to not specifically name any product.   The documentation should state as you did that all S3 compliant devices are supported.
