is it possible

+-----------------------------+               +------------------------------+
| On-Prem RAC Cluster         |               | OCI Data Guard Standby DB    |
| (ASM Storage)               |   Redo Logs   | (Managed DBaaS, ASM)         |
|                             |  <=========>  |                              |

HI @Ajal@Ajal

Yes — it’s possible, but with a few key considerations.

Commvault can back up both the database and the archive logs from your on-prem Oracle RAC and keep the Data Guard standby in OCI synchronized, but it’s important to separate what Commvault handles vs. what Oracle Data Guard handles.

🔹 Commvault’s role:

Use the Oracle iDataAgent on each RAC node to back up the primary database and archive logs (from ASM).

Configure the backup type as ARCHIVE LOG + DATABASE with Data Guard awareness enabled.

You can schedule frequent archive log backups to ensure redo logs are captured and shipped out quickly.

🔹 Oracle Data Guard’s role:

The actual log shipping and apply between the on-prem RAC and OCI DBaaS standby are managed entirely by Oracle Data Guard, not Commvault.

Commvault does not push or apply redo logs to the standby — it just protects them.

🔹 Typical design:

1. Back up the primary RAC database and logs via Commvault.

2. Let Data Guard handle real-time redo transport and apply.

3. Optionally, protect the standby database as well for DR or compliance (Oracle Agent can run in backup-from-standby mode).

🔹 What’s supported:
Oracle RAC (ASM) on-prem as primary
OCI Data Guard standby (Managed DBaaS)
Backup of both sites with Oracle Agent
Commvault doesn’t control redo apply — that’s Oracle only

---

In short:
Use Commvault for backup and recovery, and Oracle Data Guard for log shipping and apply.
They complement each other — not replace one another.

@Yann_ssg  thank you for the details , i would like to know how the logs are managed , once commvault take archive logs  , how it will make sure it is shipped before clearing the logs , or how the deleting logs work by making sure that it is applied
